The Bamboo Bar opened at the Mandarin Oriental in 1947 and bills itself as Bangkok's first jazz venue. The colonial-era room, with leopard prints and rattan chairs, has been described as a living archive of Thailand's jazz scene.

A jazz band with vocalist plays from 8pm Monday to Saturday, with a pianist on Sundays. The bar team serves award-winning signature cocktails, including the Evolution menu built around local ingredients, plus a strong list of classics.

The Bamboo Bar opens from 5pm to 1am Sunday to Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday. It is walk-in only, so arrive early for a good seat. After 6:30pm the dress code is elegant: gentlemen need long trousers and closed shoes, and sleeveless shirts are never allowed. Guests under 20 are admitted only before 7:30pm.

Bars tweak their hours and menus often, so it's worth a quick check before you head out.
